Tech Council of Maryland Launches the CyberMaryland Forum

Bi-Monthly Event Brings Together State's Top IT Professionals to Position Maryland as the Silicon Valley of Cyber Security

ROCKVILLE, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 01/28/10 -- The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) today at its "Business of Cyber Security" conference announced the launch of the CyberMaryland Forum, which will host bi-monthly meetings designed to position the state as the epicenter for information security and innovation.

Maryland already is a strategic central location for defense contractors, IT companies and cyber security researchers. More than 50 federal agencies and research facilities are located throughout the state, with additional organizations focused on federal cyber security initiatives planning to move into targeted sites in Maryland. Additionally, the state's $5.5 billion fiber-rich, redundant and reliable telecommunications network and location on a separate power grid from New York make it an ideal location for a cyber security hub.

Today's "Business of Cyber Security" conference brought together more than 220 IT professionals who are interested in further enhancing the state's focus on information security and establishing Maryland as the "Silicon Valley of Cyber Security." All attendees at today's conference have been invited to participate in the CyberMaryland Forum. In addition, other individuals interested in participating in the CyberMaryland Forum are welcome to join in order to further the conversation of how these goals can be achieved.

"Maryland has more resources in place to prevent cyber attacks, hacking and other information security breaches than most any other region in the country," said Renée M. Winsky, CEO of the Tech Council of Maryland. "Focusing on further strengthening our cyber security resources through the CyberMaryland Forum initiative is a critical step in support of the state's IT community and will ultimately result in more technology jobs being created in Maryland as innovative information security companies and government organizations headquarter their operations in the state."

"I applaud the Tech Council of Maryland for the CyberMaryland Forum. This is exactly the type of effort Governor Martin O'Malley and the Department of Business and Economic Development had in mind when we launched the CyberMaryland initiative earlier this month," said DBED Secretary Christian Johansson. "As the home of military commands and technology companies that are at the forefront of cyber security, Maryland is already a national leader in securing our country's critical cyber infrastructure. The CyberMaryland Forum will help leverage these assets in the national cyber security arena to create new jobs, drive sustained growth and generate innovations that benefit our state and our nation."

The first CyberMaryland Forum meeting is schedule for Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the TCM offices, 9713 Key West Avenue, Rockville, MD 20850. The CyberMaryland Forum is sponsored by the law firm of Morrison & Foerster.

For more information on participating in the CyberMaryland Forum, please e-mail Mark Glazer, TCM's director, MdTech programs, at [email protected] or call 240-243-4045.
